Delve into the pages of an interior decorating magazine or take a stroll through a home goods store, and you will undoubtedly come across an abundance of toiles in various forms. Toiles for All Seasons delves into the intriguing history of this versatile textile. The technology needed to create the printed fabrics we now see on everything from high-end fashion to bathroom curtains, was not developed until the mid-eighteenth century. This innovation revolutionized the economies of both Great Britain and France, paving the way for the production of colorfast fabrics for garments and home furnishings. Printed cottons quickly became a highly sought-after commodity and a significant export for both countries.
This book highlights the intricate scenic, copperplate, and engraved roller-printed fabrics of the era, showcasing the elaborate designs and uncovering the captivating stories behind the images they portray. The patterns depicted on these textiles provide a glimpse into the daily life and culture of the societies that popularized them, sparking a fashion craze that is now experiencing a resurgence in popularity both in the United States and around the world.
Starr Siegele, Adjunct Curator of Prints at the Allentown Art Museum, brings her expertise to this publication.
